What’s this about?
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) is a national agency established by the Australian Government. It produces trusted, independent information about health and wellbeing in Australia. The AIHW’s role includes:
Providing accurate statistical information
Collecting and managing important health and welfare data
Analysing data and sharing findings in reports
Developing and improving measures used to track progress in national agreements
Linking data from different sources (with approval from its Ethics Committee)
Setting and maintaining national standards for health data
The AIHW Primary Healthcare Advisory Committee (PHAC) is made up of approximately 15 members. This diverse group of professional and lived experience members helps guide how primary healthcare data is developed, analysed and shared. They provide advice on:
contemporary and emerging issues in primary healthcare in Australia
work relating to asset development, data analysis and communication of national primary healthcare information and statistics
The use and improvement of relevant websites, data dashboards and other assets
content of primary healthcare data reports and other communications
communications and engagement approaches
What’s the opportunity?
This Expression of Interest is for the Primary Healthcare Advisory Committee Consumer Representative.
As a Committee Representative, you will:
Bring both lived experience as a consumer of primary healthcare services and consumer engagement expertise to inform the advice, review and guidance work of the PHAC.
Bring an experienced understanding and data literacy (primarily quantitative data sets) to support your lived experience expertise. This includes understanding the expectations around quality, governance, privacy and usability of national data sets and their analysis to inform health policy and service improvement.
Attend all meetings (virtual only and face-to-face/hybrid meetings) and actively contribute to the discussions and development of advice
Who should apply:
You’re encouraged to apply if you:
Have lived experience as a consumer advocate to support development of primary healthcare policies, frameworks, guidelines and services.
Are passionate about how primary healthcare data is prioritised, analysed and shared to help shape policy priorities and other system/service improvements.
Have demonstrated experience in consumer engagement activities to inform policy, guidelines and framework development.
Experience working with data, including as part of ethics committees or other evidence analysis focused groups and projects will be highly regarded.
Feel comfortable sharing your views and experiences in a formal setting with people from different backgrounds, including government representatives, academics and clinicians.
Can commit to attending committee meetings online or in person.
Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
What you’ll need to do:
If selected, you’ll be asked to:
Prepare for and actively participate in quarterly meetings (online or face-to-face if required). Upcoming meetings are tentatively scheduled for:
September 2026: Online meeting (Date and time to be confirmed)
December 2026: Hybrid - face to face attendance is encouraged but not essential (Date and time to be confirmed).
Communicate if you will opt-in for out-of-session work, when needed.
Declare potential conflicts of interest at the start of each meeting.
Remuneration
AIHW remuneration rates reflect that of the Commonwealth Remuneration Tribunal for Part-Time appointments.
For Committee meetings over 4 hours, a daily rate of $476 is applied.
Committee meetings are generally between 2-3 hours and are paid at 60% of the daily rate ($286.60).
Further details about remuneration for work/attendance less than or more than this hour range will be provided during onboarding.
Pre-reading and preparation for meetings is not remunerated separately and included within the sitting fees. It is expected that between 0.5 – 2.0 hours will be required for meeting preparation.
Members can opt-in/opt-out of out of session work as remuneration is not provided outside of meeting times.
Travel will be booked for all members choosing to join the hybrid meetings in-person in Canberra. Remuneration for in-person events will be for the meeting time only.

Share what motivates you to join the committee. You might want to include your personal experiences, interests, or perspectives related to Primary Healthcare and use of data to inform policy priorities and development.
Please identify three important considerations you would bring as a consumer representative, to how the PHAC discusses analysis of primary care data and advises the Australian government on emerging primary care policy priorities?
Please share up to three examples of your work and/or consumer representative roles that demonstrate your understanding of the context, priorities and considerations for using health data to inform policy priorities.
Committee meetings are usually held for 2-3 hours duration, at times between 12pm – 5pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time). Please confirm you are available to attend online meetings during these business hours.
