Join the Antimicrobial Stewardship Advisory Committee

Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care

Expression of Interest due date: 30 July 2026, 12:00PM (AEST)

What’s this about?

Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) includes a range of activities that are carried out by health services to promote and support optimal antimicrobial prescribing and use.

Antimicrobials refer to all antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitic agents. They treat and prevent infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and other microorganisms. AMS programs help to decrease inappropriate antimicrobial use and prevent and contain antimicrobial resistance.

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care’s (the Commission) Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) Advisory Committee supports and provides advice to guide this work. The AMS Advisory Committee’s advice informs the development of strategies and resources to support implementation of AMS programs by acute, primary care and community health service organisations and aged care organisations.

Membership of the AMS Advisory Committee includes infectious disease specialists, AMS pharmacists, a nurse, a consumer representative and professional organisation representatives who have an interest in optimising use of antibiotics.

What is involved?

This Expression of Interest is for a consumer representative to join the Antimicrobial Stewardship Advisory Committee (1 July 2026 – 30 June 2029).

The AMS Advisory Committee will meet 3 times per year (online via Microsoft Teams) and technical pre-reading will be shared with the AMS Advisory Committee members at least 10 days prior to the meeting.

The topics and data discussed at the AMS Advisory Committee meetings are highly technical. Plain language summaries will not be provided for all members, but the Commission’s Secretariat team will provide comprehensive onboarding for the consumer representative and be available to meet with the consumer representative before or after each meeting to support their informed and active participation in the group if needed.

The consumer representative on the AMS Advisory Committee is expected to contribute lived experience expertise and consumer experience perspectives to the discussions. The AMS Advisory Committee is involved in the review and development of resources and materials including shared decision-making guides for health professionals and consumers, and other fact sheets for consumers and health professionals.
