Many Australians report positive healthcare experiences, but stigma and discrimination continue to affect a substantial number of consumers. More than one in three respondents reported being treated unfairly, often describing experiences of being dismissed, judged, disbelieved, or stereotyped, particularly in hospital and emergency department settings. These experiences were linked not only to identity, but also to disability, mental health conditions, age, and perceptions about a person's credibility or complexity of care.
Consumers want a healthcare system where respectful, equitable, and person-centred care is the norm. The findings show that unfair treatment can undermine trust, discourage people from seeking care, and leave consumers feeling unsafe or unheard.
Addressing stigma and discrimination requires systemic change, with greater accountability, stronger consumer voice, and healthcare services designed to deliver fairness and dignity for all.
