Healthcare affordability remains one of the biggest pressures facing Australian households. Through Australia’s Health Panel, consumers shared their experiences of managing healthcare costs, when they pay, what they expect to pay, and how financial pressure shapes their care decisions.
Panellists consistently described healthcare as expensive, unpredictable, and difficult to plan for. High out of pocket costs for specialists, dental care, mental health and allied health were top concerns, alongside frequent “bill shock” caused by unclear or incomplete cost information. Many people reported delaying or avoiding care because they weren’t confident they could find affordable providers or understand the full costs upfront.
People told us they want transparent, itemised pricing, clearer information about public and low-cost options, and more support to manage indirect costs such as travel and time away from work. These improvements are essential not just for affordability, but for rebuilding trust and ensuring that consumers can make timely decisions about their care.
This report outlines what Australians are experiencing today and the practical reforms needed to make healthcare more transparent, predictable and accessible for everyone.
