We look forward to the outcomes of the review and to the National Pain Summit in March 2010.

Abstract:CHF supports the concept of the NSQH Standards, but has concerns about their scope and how they will be applied. CHF’s primary comment on the standards is that consumers must be involved not only in the development of standards, but also in their application and reviews of achievements against the standards. Consumers should play an essential role in continuous quality improvement processes arising from the standards.

Abstract:CHF welcomes the opportunity to comment on the National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) discussion paper, Ethical Issues involved in transitions to palliation and end of life care for people with chronic conditions: A Discussion Paper for patients, carers, and health professionals. We have drawn on extensive consultation with members, including discussions as part of our Chronic Conditions Self Management project. Although we are broadly supportive of the ethical priorities put forward by the discussion paper, we are disappointed that the paper has not taken a more consumer-centred approach to questions of ethics, particularly as this is a paper that is aimed at consumers and carers.
